Here are some acronyms and terms commonly used in the field of developmental disabilities.
ADA - Americans with Disabilities Act
ADD - Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD – with Hyperactivity)
APS - Adult Protective Services
APSE - Association for Persons in Supported Employment
ATC - Adult Training Center
CCW - Community Care Waiver
Cognitive Disability – Refers to mental impairments that may be the result of developmental difficulties or injury. These impairments limit learning capacity and memory and an individual may need support through different ways of learning and remembering things.
COLA - Cost of Living Adjustment
COSAC- NJ Center for Outreach and Services to the Autistic Community
DADD - Division of Advocacy for the Developmentally Disabled
DDC - NJ Developmental Disabilities Council
DDD - Division of Developmental Disabilities, under the New Jersey Department of Human Services (DHS)
DDD eligibility requirements: A persons is eligible for DDD services if he or she has a mental or physical impairment that is apparent before age 22, is lifelong and substantially limited the individual in at least three of the following areas: self-care, learning, mobility, communication, self-direction, economic self-sufficiency and ability to live independently. These are also the characteristics that define “developmental disability.” This includes conditions and illnesses of mental retardation, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, spina bifida, autism and other neurological impairments.
DYFS - Division of Youth and Family Services
EQP - Early Intervention Program
HIPAA - Refers to the federal regulations under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996. These rules determine how medical records must be stored and transmitted in order to protect the privacy of an individual’s past, present, and future physical or mental health condition and related health care services.
HSAC - Human Services Advisory Council (one in each county plus a state HSAC)
HUD - US Department of Housing and Urban Development
IDEA - Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (federal legislation)
IEP - Individualized Educational Program
IFSP - Individualized Family Service Plan
IHP - Individualized Habilitation Plan
ISP - Individual Service Plan

OPMRDD – Office for the Prevention of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities (NJ)
OSERS - Office of Special Education and Rehabilitation Services (NJ)
PASP - Personal Assistant Services Program
PASS - Plan for Achieving Self Support
PNA - Funds provided to a consumer to meet their personal needs.
Respite Care – Relief for the caregiver from around-the-clock care of a person who has a disability
SICC - State Interagency Coordinating Council
